“RANI IS FULL TERM NOW”

Today Binu came to the hospital a little worried.
“Rani is full term now… Doctor, I want some advice. Last time all her pups died. ”
RAja & Rani are Binu,s pets…lovely , black  dachshund couple.
“When was the mating?”I asked.
“Today is the 55th day.”
“The gestation period of a bitch is 63  days with a range of 58 to 65 days.
That means she can welp any day…. Keep her under close observation.”
“Any special care?”
“Towards the end of the pregnancy the mother will seek a safe, warm, dark, quite place
in a secluded area. ”
“I have already provided her a welping box.”
“That is good.In the box provide good bedding.”
“Will bedding with old cotton cloth be enough.”
“For bedding you can use cloths, news paper, straw, gunny bags etc. what is important is
is it should be clean and dry.”
“Will there be complications?.
“Rarely. But we can,t predict . Watch her .If you suspect some complications call me.
it is possible to deliver the pups through a caesarien section.Don,t worry.”
“Is there any special care I should give to the pups soon after their birth?”
“Dogs deliver the pups in a bag. After the birth, the mother will remove the covering
and start licking vigourously and eat the membranes”.
“Eat the membranes?”
“Yes. It is normal for the dogs to eat the bag after the birth of the pups.Rarely some
dogs will not attend to  the pups. Then we have to give special attention .”
“I know nothing about the management new borns .If Rani does,nt attend the pups?”
“You should remove the placental covering with your finger, then dry the pups with a
clean dry towel.Take special care to clean the mouth and nose to clear the mucus .
Another important thing to do is to tie the naval cord with a sterile cotton thread
and tie it 1cm  away from its abdomen and apply the stump with any mild antiseptic
like tr iodin.”
“O.K doctor .Thank you very much.”
